How to Connect a JKBMS PB Series BMS to a Solis Inverter: CAN Wiring & Setup

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Connecting a JKBMS JIKONG PB Series BMS to a compatible Solis inverter requires more than plugging in a network cable. The CAN wiring, battery voltage range, communication protocol, and inverter battery profile must all match.

This guide explains the checks and setup process for a compatible low-voltage Solis battery inverter. It is not a universal compatibility statement for every Solis model, and it does not cover high-voltage battery systems.

Before you begin: confirm the exact equipment

Record the Solis model and firmware, the PB model and hardware/firmware version, and the communication interface-board version. Confirm the battery operating voltage is within the inverter's specified battery range. Check the current Solis battery compatibility information and obtain confirmation for your exact battery/BMS combination before commissioning. Selecting a Pylontech profile does not make a DIY battery an approved Pylontech battery.

Safety: Battery systems can deliver hazardous energy. Installation and commissioning should be performed by a qualified installer. Isolate equipment and follow both manufacturers' shutdown and startup instructions before changing wiring. This article covers communication setup, not battery power wiring, protection sizing, or cell-sense wiring.

Step 1: Check the CAN ports and cable pinout

Use the PB interface board's dedicated CAN connector and the Solis battery communication connector identified in its manual, often labeled BMS. Do not use a LAN, meter, RS485, or parallel-link port merely because it accepts an RJ45 plug.

Solis documentation identifies the inverter-side CAN signals as:

  • Pin 4: CAN-H
  • Pin 5: CAN-L

Important PB-side difference: The supplied PB connector drawing shows, in the illustrated viewing direction, NC, NC, NC, CAN-L, CAN-H, NC, GND, NC. Thus the CAN connector has CAN-L on local pin 4 and CAN-H on local pin 5. Published PB interface documentation for models such as JK-PB2A16S20P also shows CAN-L as pin 12 and CAN-H as pin 13 in a combined 1–16 drawing of the paired RS485/CAN sockets, corresponding to local pins 4 and 5 of the CAN socket. Confirm the numbering and connector viewing direction in the drawing supplied with your actual interface board.

If your PB board matches this drawing and your Solis manual confirms CAN-H on pin 4 and CAN-L on pin 5, use this mapping:

  • PB CAN-H, local CAN pin 5 → Solis CAN-H, pin 4.
  • PB CAN-L, local CAN pin 4 → Solis CAN-L, pin 5.

This requires swapping the pin positions 4 and 5 between the cable ends, while keeping CAN-H connected to CAN-H and CAN-L connected to CAN-L. Do not connect H to L. CAN uses H/L signal names; A/B labels belong to the separate RS485 interface shown in the drawing.

For that layout, a straight-through 4-to-4 / 5-to-5 cable would reverse CAN-H and CAN-L. Use a correctly wired communication cable, not an assumed standard Ethernet cable or a generic Ethernet crossover cable. If your board or inverter documentation shows a different layout, follow that layout instead.

Verify the completed cable end-to-end while disconnected. Check signal names and pin numbers, not wire colors alone. Ground, shield, unused conductors, and bus termination must follow the exact equipment manuals; do not arbitrarily join all remaining pins or add termination resistors. The PB drawing shows GND on local pin 7, but that does not establish which Solis pin it should connect to. Confirm any ground connection in both equipment manuals. A shielded twisted-pair cable may be appropriate where specified, but the connector pin mapping still needs verification.

Step 2: Select the matching CAN protocol in the JKBMS app

  1. Connect to the correct PB BMS through Bluetooth in the JKBMS app.
  2. Open the communication/protocol settings. Menu wording can vary with the app and firmware.
  3. Locate the CAN protocol selection, not an RS485/UART protocol setting.
  4. If the exact Solis model and firmware are confirmed to accept the PB's PYLON CAN profile, select the corresponding PYLON/Pylontech CAN option. Do not substitute a PYLON RS485 option.
  5. If a Solis-specific CAN option is available, use it only when the equipment documentation or technical support confirms it is the correct match for the selected Solis profile.
  6. Save the setting, read it back to confirm it was retained, and follow the PB instructions if a restart is required.

Do not copy protocol numbers from another firmware version: names, numbering, and supported profiles may differ. Battery chemistry, capacity, and protection settings must also be correct for the actual pack; protocol selection is not a substitute for configuring those parameters.

CAN protocol menu reference images

The following display-menu screenshots are reused from our two-8S-pack parallel-system example. They illustrate the available protocol labels in that example, not a tested Solis installation or a requirement to use two 8S packs. They are display screenshots, not Bluetooth-app screenshots; your app, display, and firmware menus may differ.

PB display CAN protocol menu, entries 000 to 006, including 002 PYLON-low-voltage-V1.2

CAN menu, first page: the example shows 002 — PYLON-low-voltage-V1.2. Use the matching CAN profile only after confirming compatibility with the exact Solis model and firmware. The number 002 is specific to the menu shown.

PB display CAN protocol menu, entries 007 to 011

CAN menu, second page: additional protocol choices shown in the same example. A listed brand or protocol is not proof that a particular inverter model is compatible.

RS485 protocol menu images: comparison only

This guide uses CAN, not RS485. These two screenshots are included to help distinguish the separate menus. PYLON RS485 and PYLON CAN are different communication options and cannot be substituted for each other. Do not change UART/RS485 settings for this CAN connection merely to match these screenshots.

PB display RS485 protocol menu including 005 PYLON low-voltage RS485 V3.5, not a CAN setting

RS485 reference: the example includes 005 — PYLON_low_voltage_Protocol_RS485_V3.5. This is not the CAN profile described above.

PB display RS485 protocol menu including 014 9600 PYLON low-voltage RS485 V3.5, not a CAN setting

RS485 reference: the other page includes 014 — (9600)PYLON_low_voltage_Protocol_RS485_V3.5. It is also an RS485 option, not a setting for this CAN guide. Protocol numbers and displayed text may change between firmware versions.

Step 3: Configure the Solis battery profile

Open the battery configuration menu on the inverter or its supported local commissioning interface. The path may appear as Settings → Battery Select, but the exact menu depends on the Solis model and firmware.

  1. Select the lithium battery mode intended for closed-loop CAN communication.
  2. Select the matching battery model/protocol. On supported low-voltage Solis models, the Pylontech CAN profile may be labeled PYLON_LV or Pylontech. Use it only when confirmed for your installation.
  3. Do not assume a generic “Lithium” setting alone selects the correct protocol. Some Solis models have a separate battery type and battery model selection; “Lithium Battery LV” can denote a Solis-specific CAN profile rather than Pylontech.
  4. Do not select a profile labeled RS485 for this CAN connection, or a “Without COMM” open-loop mode when the aim is BMS communication.
  5. Save the configuration and follow the model-specific commissioning/startup sequence. If a separate communication enable setting exists, configure it as instructed in that model's manual.

Step 4: Verify communication before normal operation

After startup, check the inverter's battery information against the JKBMS app. Confirm that SOC and battery voltage are plausible and update, and that current direction and magnitude are reasonable during controlled charging or discharging. A near-zero current reading can be normal at idle.

Check temperature, charge/discharge permissions, and BMS current limits where those values are exposed. Confirm there are no active battery communication alarms, which may be labeled CAN COM Fail, Batt_Comm_FAIL, or another model-specific message.

A voltage reading alone does not confirm successful CAN communication. Confirm live BMS data and stable operation, not just the absence of an alarm. Begin with conservative operating limits appropriate to the battery, BMS, wiring, and inverter ratings.

If communication fails

  • Recheck the exact port and CAN-H/CAN-L mapping on both ends. Isolate equipment before changing wiring.
  • Confirm the PB is configured for CAN and that its protocol matches the inverter's selected profile.
  • Check that saved settings remain in place and that any required restart was completed.
  • For parallel packs, follow the PB parallel-system instructions for master selection, addresses, inter-pack wiring, and termination. Do not assume a universal master address.
  • Do not randomly update firmware or try unrelated battery profiles. Obtain model-specific guidance if the cable and settings are correct but communication still fails.

Need help confirming your setup?

Send the exact Solis model and firmware, PB model and hardware/firmware version, clear photos of the interface-board labels, and screenshots of both protocol settings. Include the alarm text and the cable pin mapping. Do not reconnect or experiment with uncertain wiring.
